North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has criticized the reclusive country’s traditional close allies China and Russia as unreliable, Japan’s Kyodo news agency said.
Kim’s skepticism toward China and Russia was expressed at an ambassadorial meeting in Pyongyang, which took place soon after the UN Security Council passed a resolution on July 15 condemning the North Korea’s test-firing of missiles, Kyodo reported from New York late Saturday citing unnamed sources.
The ambassadorial meeting was called urgently in late July, but Kim himself may not have attended the meeting, with his views conveyed by senior officials, Kyodo said.
Kim’s open criticism of China and Russia indicates Pyongyang may risk further international isolation which was increased by its ballistic missile launches in July 5 despite international protests.
China has been asking North Korea to exercise restraint and return to the six-party talks on the North’s nuclear ambitions, AFP reports. The talks ―- involving China, Japan, North and South Korea, Russia and the United States ―- have stalled since the fifth round in November last year.
On the missile issue, China and Russia initially opposed adopting the UN resolution but eased their opposition after a Chinese mediation mission to Pyongyang failed to achieve any tangible results. China and Russia accepted the UN resolution presented by Japan and the United States after the paragraphs on economic sanctions were removed
